BreakfastSeries

"What are you waiting for? The
Madness and Magic of making a Dream come true in China"
with Peter Schindler, ex racing driver, IT and management consultant,
author and adventurer
Mongkok, Hong Kong. January 2005. It was one o'clock in the afternoon
when I lost my way. The roads and sidewalks were full of people, all in
search of a quick lunch. When I am lost, I am absorbed with myself. So I
didn't notice at first what was going on around me. But when at last I
did, I was astonished: office workers in dark suits were snapping
pictures of me and my car with their camera phones; elderly ladies
looked upon us quizzically; retired men wore faces that betrayed dreams
about could-have-been; young ladies shed their aloofness and approached
us; kids went gaga. But above all, they all smiled broad, indefatigable
smiles. Which was when an idea shot through my head: 'What if I took a
car like this into China?
In 2007 Peter Schindler completed an incredible 21,000km journey from
the mouth to the source of the Yangtze River (and on to Lhasa) and then
from the source to the mouth of the Yellow River … in a Caterham (a
remake of the original 1950’s Lotus 7). Once completed, the car
featuring hundreds of autographs collected during its travels was
auctioned by China’s basketball superstar Yao Ming and proceeds donated
to charity – the China Youth Development Foundation.
This will be a not-to-be-missed presentation. Get your friends and
colleagues together and join us to hear Peter’s story, because Peter has
an amazing story to tell. It shows …
• the spirit of perseverance and adventure needed to make inroads into
China;
• how very different China is to many of our preconceptions of the
mainland;
• how resourceful one has to be to get round seemingly impenetrable
barriers; and, in the end
• what an amazingly varied and rewarding country China is.

APEC SYMPOSIUM ON TRADE
FACILITATION 2007 : Hong Kong Convention And Exhibition Centre : 4-5
June 2007
Trade facilitation means making markets more efficient. It means
reducing costs to business operating in and especially between markets.
And it means regulators and government officials working toward these
shared goals. Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), established in
1989, is the premier forum in the Asia-Pacific region for facilitating
trade and investment and promoting economic cooperation and growth. Over
the years, the 21 APEC member economies have worked together to take
forward facilitation initiatives such as simplifying customs procedures,
enhancing business mobility through the APEC Business Travel Card, and
promoting electronic commerce. Such work has helped improve the region's
business environment by slashing business costs and time.
Hong Kong joined APEC in 1991, and continues to participate in APEC
under the name of "Hong Kong, China" as a separate and full member from
1 July 1997. As one of most liberal and open economies in the world,
Hong Kong is strongly committed to facilitating trade and investment. As
the host of the APEC Symposium on Trade Facilitation 2007 to be held on
4 and 5 June 2007, Hong Kong again demonstrates its commitment to and
support for trade facilitation. The Symposium aims to provide a forum
for dialogue between the public and private sectors, with a view to
better matching trade facilitation measures with the needs of
businesses, especially the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which
are the major economic force in the APEC community. Please download this
form (pdf format) for registration. Attendance is free. Registrations
are on a first-come-first-served basis and should be submitted (in terms
of the downloaded form) by 15 May 2007.
2007 ZHUHAI-MACAU INVESTMENT
ENVIRONMENT PROMOTION AND TRADE FAIR : Zhuhai : Monday 28 May 2007
NZCCHK members are invited to attend the Zhuhai/Macau Investment
Environment Promotion and Trade Fair to be held at the Zhuhai
International Conference Center Hotel on 28 May 2007. The focus of the
Zhuhai-Macau Investment Environment Promotion and Trade Fair will be on
the promotion of the services, IT, port logistics and heavy chemical
industries. This event is designed to provide vital investment
information regarding the region and to serve as a unique opportunity to
access key Zhuhai and Macau government representatives. It will provide
a friendly and fertile environment to network with government, business
people and investors from many different countries. Since becoming a
Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in 1980, Zhuhai has experienced tremendous
growth in its export-oriented economy. By taking advantage of its
special geographic location bordering Hong Kong by water and Macau by
land, Zhuhai and Macau have become two shining pearls embedded on the
west bank of Zhujiang River.
In just 20 years, Zhuhai has developed from a small fishing village into
a unique ecological and garden-style coastal city at stunning speed.
Zhuhai has three major modes of transportation: land, sea and air. It
possesses rich land resources and the infrastructure to support new
development. With seven universities in the area, Zhuhai has a large
pool of well educated human resources and it has several golf courses,
several sports and entertainment facilities and an aerospace exhibition.
Zhuhai supports an F1 Racing track, hosts a major aviation show and is
home to the famous Ocean Spring Resort. Since 1557, Macau has enjoyed an
international reputation as the “Oriental Monte Carlo”. Since becoming a
Special Administrative Region, Macau has witnessed astonishing
development in the financial, service and hospitality industries and has
generated extensive media attention and has secured major investments
from world class companies from throughout the world.
Together, Zhuhai and Macau compliment each other in terms of resources,
social systems, industries and culture. Far-sighted business people can
clearly see that the construction of Zhuhai-Macau-Hong Kong Bridge will
provide the infrastructure to support explosive, sustainable and
transformative growth.
NZCCHK members whishing to attend the Fair should register with Polly
Chan. The Fair is free of charge inclusive of events and buffet lunch,
but members will be responsible for their own travel, visa and all other

UP CLOSE WITH EDWARD DE BONO :
Wednesday 21 March 2007
The World’s leader in creative thinking, Edward de Bono, has some
powerful lessons to make people more successful by changing the way they
think about business, family and life. The international best-selling
author has been described as a cult figure in developing techniques to
sharpen the mind to boost problem solving effectiveness. While thousands
of people write software for computers, he is the pioneer in writing
software for the human brain. Edward de Bono was a judge at the recent
Saatchi & Saatchi World Changing Ideas Awards held in New York to
uncover innovations or communications that have the potential to change
the world. Fellow judges included Lou Reed, Baz Luhrmann and Oliviero
Toscani. Edward de Bono will be in Hong Kong on March 21, 2007 and will
provide intensive full-day workshops in creative thinking.
The workshops are expected to be a big hit with people of varying
background, from CEO’s, General Managers, Marketing/Communication
Managers to Training and Development Managers, Creative Directors,
Strategists and Educators. For organisations, it is seen as an
exceptional team building experience in learning specific techniques for
approaching issues and opportunities, which can be learnt, practised and
used with powerful effect. It is also a unique client hosting
opportunity allowing organisations to build relationships, educate and
entertain clients; and network with key decision makers. Edward de Bono
instructions on thinking have been sought by world-wide corporations
such as IBM, Microsoft, Prudential and Nokia. The Australian Cricket
team was another to seek his help and they went on to become one of, if
not, the most powerful forces on the world cricket stage. Dr de Bono
invented the concept of LATERAL THINKING and developed formal techniques
for deliberate creative thinking. He is one of the very few people in
history to have had a major impact on the way we think, rather than what
we think. His career began in his native Malta as a Doctor of Medicine
and Surgery and continued at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and Cambridge
University. He is the author of 68 books translated into 37 languages.
He has travelled the world for 30 years addressing a broad range of
groups from global corporations to governments.
